What’s the Deal?

1) =  How are you?/ what’s up? (informal greeting)

2) = please explain the situation/ problem/ plan

Ex: So, “what’s the deal?”  How have you been?  = tell me about your life (informal)

Ex: Sara hasn’t been to work in a week.  “What’s the deal?” = what’s the problem

Ex: So “what’s the deal” for dinner tonight? Are we eating at home or going out to eat?  = what’s the plan

* When you say “what’s the deal?” to a person or about a person it has a negative meaning. (“Why are you/ they acting that way?”) You can also say what’s his/her/your deal?”

Ex: “What’s the deal with John?” He’s been acting strange recently.

Ex: “What’s your deal?” You’re always acting rude to me.
