= understanding something completely, forces you to understand something unpleasant
Ex: My girlfriend’s negative comments about my smoking habit really “hit home,” so I decided to quit smoking.
Ex: The teacher told the parents he wasn’t doing good at math, but her words didn’t “hit home” until they saw his report card and saw he was failing the class.
Ex: The girl’s negative comments about my clothes “hit home,” so I changed what I was wearing.
