=  an obvious problem or risk no one wants to discuss

Ex: Everyone gets mad at Jim for his rude behavior and not taking a bath, but the “elephant in the room” is his problem with alcohol.

 

Ex: During a quiet dinner with his parents, the “elephant in the room” was that he is 45 years-old and single.
